2. THE MORE OILS IN THE SPF, THE BETTER THE PROTECTIVE PROPERTIES?
In fact, all seed oils change the refractive index of light with titanium particles. And the actual protection factor will be less than the one declared on the package. And even if you apply a care cream or oil and then SPF, you will still reduce the level of protection. The time spent in the sun will be significantly reduced, and the probability of getting a sunburn, pigmentation and severe xerosis of the skin will increase. By the way, mineral oil is the only thing that does not reduce the sunscreen properties of the cream.
3. IS IT POSSIBLE TO AVOID PIGMENTATION WITH THE HELP OF PRODUCTS WITH SPF?
Melanocytes are cells that synthesize melanin and provide protection against photodamage. They have a neurogenic origin, so they are able to increase their sensitivity to the sun (photosensitization) depending on the patient’s lifestyle. There are many factors that increase photosensitization: vitamin C, retinol and its derivatives, taking antibiotics, etc. In such situations, even maximum protection may not protect against hyperpigmentation.
Also, these cells are capable of migration, which means that if you have not protected your face from the sun’s rays all your life, and then read the article and decided to protect yourself as much as possible at least from solar lentigo, then, unfortunately, all the melanocytes from places not hit by the sun will move to those areas somehow reached by the sun rays. Therefore, the use of cream with SPF is simply necessary from the very first sunny day.
4. WHAT CAN SPF CREAM DO BESIDES SUN PROTECTION?
Of course, SPF is for sun protection, but we always want more, it would be nice if it also took care of the skin. And such creams do exist! The composition includes components that can moisturise the skin. Due to this melanocytes will not react too aggressively to ultraviolet rays, and the tan will be more even. Also, antioxidants can be used among the components, which will inhibit peroxidation of free radicals, thereby preventing the appearance of the first signs of photoaging.
5. DOES SPF CREAM PROTECT FROM MELANOMA?
Unfortunately no. It has been studied and proven that ultraviolet rays are a strong provoking factor in the development of one of the most dangerous malignant neoplasms of the skin – melanoma. Ultraviolet rays are divided into several spectra: A, B, C, long-wave, medium-wave and short-wave, respectively. Going through the ozone layer, only UVA and a small part of UVB are retained. SPF cream with UVA and UVB filters prevents water loss, reduces hyperemia, reduces the sensitivity of melanocytes, thereby reducing the risk of hyperpigmentation. But even the maximum protection will not be able to protect 100% from UVB rays, which have a destructive effect on the DNA of cells.
We can only prevent it. Follow simple rules of staying in the sun and you’ll protect not only your skin, but the genomic material of your cells. Especially if you don’t disregard the gold standard and don’t sunbathe at hours when a match stuck in the sand on the beach is longer than its shadow.
